Currently, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is meeting in Biloxi, MS. The Council is considering Reef Fish Amendment 40. Put simply, this amendment considers separating components of the recreational fishery into the “for-hire” component and the “private angler” component. The Council’s Preferred Alternative for the allocations for these components is based on landings from 1996 to 2013 (2010 excluded) which would be 45.9% “for hire” and 54.1% “private angler”. There are 8 total allocation alternatives that can be found on page 20 of the amendment (link below).
If you cannot attend the meeting tonight, you can submit comments electronically. You can comment on (1) recreational component separation; and (2) the allocation alternatives being considered.
